But a growing number of people are finding jobs that allow them to earn from the comfort of their own residence. 1. Work for A Virtual Call Center
While customer service representatives and other call center workers used to congregate in large buildings stuffed with cubicles, technology has made it possible for employees to fulfill all of their duties from home, with a laptop and headset typically the only equipment needed. Companies like 1-800 Flowers, Amazon, and American Express all permit their call center workers to operate from home. If you like talking to people and you’re good at answering questions, this could be a great gig!
2. Teach Students English & Other Subjects Online
Remote education, in which teachers connect with students via the Internet rather than in person, is a rapidly growing field. In particular, the demand for English-speaking teachers in foreign countries is so high that companies have sprung up to facilitate connections between students eager to learn from a native speaker and teachers who need extra dough. If you’re a stickler for spelling and grammar, this could be your dream job! Typically, you’re required to take a test to prove you’re adept at catching errors, then paid per page.
4. Data Entry
It’s not the most thrilling job in the world, but data entry is a necessary part of operations for many companies in technology, retail, and other fields. It involves inputting information, typically from paper or voice recordings, into a computer database, and not much else. That means you can do data entry while listening to audiobooks or podcasts, making it a great gig for people who like to listen more than talk.
5. Insurance Underwriting
One of the more lucrative work-from-home jobs, insurance underwriting usually requires some level of experience. But if you’ve worked in a clerical or administrative capacity before, that’s enough to land the job at many companies. You’ll be looking through clients’ histories, including other insurance policies they’ve held and medical records, to evaluate their eligibility for insurance and the level at which they qualify. It’s not easy work but it often pays well.
6. Translator
Another work-from-home job that requires a little bit of experience or preexisting knowledge, translating texts from one language to another merely requires fluency in both languages and a knowledge of grammatical and syntactical rules. It’s a skill that you can learn pretty quickly if you’re already conversant in both languages. This is a job that will keep your brain engaged, even on the couch, and you may find yourself translating some really interesting documents and books.
